Student Loans, grants and Bursaries

Here is an outline of the different funding options available from Canada and Manitoba Student Loans:

  • Canada Student Loan | Interest-free while you are going to school full-time. Interest starts to accumulate as soon as you stop going to school full-time. Payments start six months after you stop going to school full-time.

  • Manitoba Student Loan | Interest-free while you are going to school full-time and during repayment. Payments start six months after you stop going to school full-time.

  • Manitoba Bursary | Students are automatically considered for this program when they submit their application for Canada and Manitoba Student Loans. Indigenous learners who self-identify may be eligible for additional Manitoba Bursary.

  • Canada Student Grant for Full-Time Students with Dependants | Available to low-income full-time students with children under the age of 12 or person(s) who are wholly dependent by reason of a mental or physical infirmity.

  • Canada Student Grant for Full-Time Students | Available to eligible students based on their family size, previous year’s Gross Family Income, and program length.

  • Skills Boost Top-up to the Canada Student Grant for Full-Time Students | Students who are eligible for the Canada Student Grant for Full-Time Students and who have been out of secondary school for at least 10 years, may be eligible for an additional grant.

  • Canada Student Grant for Students with Permanent Disabilities | Helps full-time and part-time permanently disabled students with living costs, tuition and books.

  • Canada Student Grant for Services and Equipment for Students with Permanent Disabilities | Requires a separate application. Available to eligible students to help pay for specialized equipment and services for school.

  • Part-Time Student Loan | Accumulate interest while you are in school. You can make interest-only payments while in school or make no payments until six months after your studies end.

  • Canada Student Grant for Part-Time Studies | For students studying part-time whose family income falls within the "low-income" level as defined by the Canada Student Loans Program.

  • Canada Student Grant for Part-Time Students with Dependants | Available to part-time students with children under the age of 12 or person(s) who are wholly dependent by reason of a mental or physical infirmity.

  • Aboriginal Education Award | Helps Indigenous students with the costs of tuition, books and supplies. Visit: Business Council of Manitoba – Aboriginal Education Awards

 Personal/ Family Funding

Indigenous Post-Secondary Support

  • Post-Secondary Student Support Program | Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) provides financial assistance to First Nations students who are enrolled in eligible post-secondary programs. Click here to learn more.

  • Inuit Post-Secondary Education Strategy | Funding is allocated annually for direct financial support for Inuit post-secondary students. Click here to learn more.

  • Metis Nation Post-Secondary Education Strategy | The goal of the strategy is to close the post-secondary education attainment gap between Métis Nation students and non-Indigenous students in Canada through distinctions-based and regionally delivered strategic support. Funding is allocated annually for direct financial support for Métis Nation post-secondary students. Click here to learn more.

  • Manitoba Metis Federation | The MMF Post-Secondary Education Support program is open to MMF Citizens, including those in the registration process. You will apply online at mmfeducation.ca/apply and the Program Review Committee will select the recipients of the bursary/scholarship.   • Band Funding | Contact your band/tribal council to find out what funding they offer members of your band.

Persons with Disabilities, neurodiversity or learning disabilites

Funding Related to Employment

  • Canada Training Credit | A new refundable tax credit that allows eligible workers to receive $250 per year towards their training amount limit, up to a lifetime limit of $5,000, to help fund future eligible tuition and fees. Click here to learn more.

  • Employment Insurance Training Support Benefit | Provides eligible workers with up to four weeks of income support, paid at 55 percent of average weekly insurable earnings, to be taken within a four-year period when they require time off work to train. Click here to learn more.

  • New leave provisions under the Canada Labour Code that would allow federally regulated workers to take time away from work to pursue training and receive the EI Training Support Benefit without risk to their job security. Click here to learn more.

  • Manitoba Jobs and Skills Development | The Government of Manitoba provides skills development assistance if you have a current or previous Employment Insurance claim, are employed but low skilled, are in receipt of provincial Employment and Income Assistance benefits or are an individual who is unemployed or about to lose their job.
