What Qualifies as a Disability for Canada Student Grants?
You could be awarded up to $4,000 as a student with a disability.
The Canada Student Grant for Students with Disabilities is available to students each year of their study as long as they still qualify.
You could also receive up to $20,000 per school year for the Canada Student Grant for Services and Equipment - Students with Disabilities. This means you can get the support and equipment you need to complete the program successfully.
You could be eligible for up to $4,000 from the Grant for Students with Disabilities per year if you apply and:
have a financial need
are a student with a disability recognized by the Canada Student Financial Assistance Program and
provide a document(s) that shows you have a disability with your application
This grant is provided to those meeting the Canada Student Loan Programs definition of permanent disability as defined in the Canada Student Financial Assistance Regulations to be:
A functional limitation caused by a physical or mental impairment that restricts the ability of a person to perform the daily activities necessary to participate in studies at a post-secondary school level or in the labour force and is expected to remain with the person for the person's expected life.
To qualify, you must provide proof of the permanent disability in the form of:
A medical certificate
A psychoeducational assessment (for a learning disability); or
Documentation proving receipt of federal or provincial disability assistance
This documentation must:
Describe the disability (providing the specific diagnosis is optional)
Confirm whether or not the applicant's functional limitations are expected to be permanent; and
Explain how the applicant's functional limitations restricts their ability to perform the daily activities necessary to participate in studies at a post-secondary level or the labour force.
